Stone Medicine is remarkable - a fermented dark tea from Wuzhou, Guangxi, aged in bamboo-basket, a practice that predates modern shou puerh and shares its earthy, transformative depth. Long prized in Malaysia and Hong Kong as both an medicinal tea and digestive aid, good Liu Bao rewards patience the way puerh does. Believed to have been produced as a special order using high-grade, bud-rich Golden Pekoe material, this tea has had three decades of pristine aging, moving from Malaysia to Taiwan along the way, with no jin hua and no shortcuts. This particular vintage, from Kunming Tea Factory and stored through the traditional, more humid method for decades, has developed the deep, medicine chest complexity that long, traditional storage produces: a little smoky, a little like an old Chinese herb shop, with notes of leather, antique wood, and dried date sweetness that balances its earthiness. For a lot of people, fully relaxing and settling is difficult, as we’re kept in low-grade activation by a constant hum of striving and rushing. Turning inward means beginning to let things settle: slowing the practice itself. Longer bowl tea sits. Longer meditations. A real letting go of pressure and unnecessary activity, rather than one more thing to optimize. This tea does exactly that. It carries an old timer's antique quality, tea for cultivating wisdom, slowness, longevity, and endurance rather than intensity. When we actually slow down, we see more clearly, and there is spaciousness in that clarity: room to get back in touch with what we value and how we're actually living. In that time, most tea from Jiangcheng was purchased by state-owned factories and blended into large productions. Only a small amount circulated independently as loose tea, later known as “Old Loose Tea.” Unpressed and freely traded, these leaves aged naturally under diverse conditions, developing complex, individual personalities. Fengqing is considered the historic birthplace of Dian Hong, and the large leaf varietal grown there is what gives teas like this one their thick, downy buds and naturally sweet, malty character. Each leaf twists into a slender, unbroken thread, more delicate to look at than most red teas. Dry, the leaves carry a bright, fruity aroma, something like melon, that gives little hint of the malty depth in the cup.

Brewed, the liquor settles into a warm amber, bright rather than dark. The tea opens malty and understated at first, but subsequently reveals layers of cacao and molasses with a raisin sweetness in the finish. Underneath it all runs a soft, clean woodiness that's neither dry nor earthy, but gives Golden Needle real depth. The energy is easygoing and gently uplifting. Many red teas are strong enough to unsettle the stomach in a morning session, but this one is gentle on the body and endlessly patient, holding its flavor through many steepings.

This tea comes to us through a friend of Living Tea's, originally from Yunnan, who works closely with the small producer behind it throughout the year. Nong Xiang, meaning "strong fragrance," is the traditional, heavily roasted, more fully oxidized style that defined the tea for generations, before a wave of lighter, greener processing, known as Qing Xiang, took over the market chasing brighter aroma and fresher appeal. This tea is a return to that earlier way of making Tie Guan Yin: patient roasting over patient oxidation, depth over immediacy. By the fourth, that tartness resolves into a mineral sweetness, round and satisfying without ever going flat.
